audio electronicsI distinctly remember spending summer with my family. The one thing that kept us going in that merciless heat were our audio electronics.

I’d wake up to the sound of my brother blasting 80s hair metal on his boombox during his daily ritualistic workouts. Mind you that though this took place in the basement I could still hear it from the second floor. It was his way of zoning out all distractions.

At some point in the afternoon my sister would either go to the beach or lie in the backyard to tan. She would take her radio with her to keep her and her friends entertained. It kept her out of my parents’ hair for the rest of the day.

Even on family vacations audio electronics kept us sane. We’d have our rent-a-car, complete with malfunctioning air conditioner and little to no leg room. In order to avoid any conversation whatsoever with my siblings or parents I had my cassette player cranked at full volume. A year or two later the cassette player was replaced with a CD player and several years after that came my iPod.

See, that’s the beauty of audio electronics. It’s universally acceptable to disappear into your thoughts when you use them. They’re good mediators for peace and familial relations; and act as a valuable form of entertainment.

The Modern Age: Mobile Laptops and More

audio electronicsFor some reason kids cartoons always portray the grumpy old man next door as this fish out of water in the modern world. Usually the super-techie genius kid protagonist is creating some wild invention and the neighbor yells, “Stop making a racket with that conflabbit contraption thing-a-ma-jig!” In reality, though, technology advances quite naturally albeit quickly. People more or less adapt to it once it’s been around for enough time.

The iPod, for example, was a huge deal when it was first released. People were gossiping about how outrageous it was for an audio electronics device. Sure there had been a few mp3 players but their popularity took a while to get going. Once they were mainstreamed into an accessible form there was no stopping it. The evolution started another “music revolution” and now it’s commonplace. Same goes for computers. It started with the consumer desktop PC, then laptops, mobile laptops, and now we’re seeing tablets emerge.

Media in general has been changed. Books are now on eReaders, movies are downloadable files for your cell phones, and online streaming replaced the movie rental store. It’s a drastic change from, say, the 1960s but for some reason nobody seems to notice the shift. Or maybe they just don’t care all too much.
